A Whale of a Tale: "Jonah" Chips Away at Ye's Anti-Semitism

Let's put together a little name puzzle, for the sake of cultural understanding.

On August 8th, 2020, the 19 year old musical artist name Jonah Ware was shot & killed in Kentucky. Ye releases his album Donda in August 2021. One of the songs (featuring Vory & Lil Durk) is called "Jonah". This song's title is a reference to Jonah Ware. The lyrics deal with the theme of gang violence and coping with the death of a loved one. Despite these difficult themes, the album puports to be Christian. On closer inspection, one of the original hebrew meanings of the name Jonah is "Dove". No wonder then, Ye has used the Dove image for various designs, like the Donda sports logo or his political ad in the New York Times in 2020.

More recently, Ye has been openly anti-semitic. Now he says Jonah Hill's performance in the 21 Jump Street movie is moving his heart towards more godly behaviour. Jonah Hill has been open in interviews about how Ye (the artist formerly known as Kanye West?) is his favourite artist of all time. Jonah Hill is of course, very jewish. Perhaps Ye should also watch Jonah Hill's directorial work like "Stutz"? This meta-documentary film explores Jonah Hill's relationship with his therapist Phil Stutz and is perhaps the best introduction you can give to someone about the process of therapy, where they have never tried it or stopped doing it for some reason. Anyways, how does this all relate to the Bible?

The story of Jonah is a well-known tale and it centers around a prophet, who was called to spread Godliness to the people of Nineveh. However, Jonah disobeyed God and attempted to flee by boarding a ship headed in the opposite direction. During the voyage, a great storm arose and in order to appease it, Jonah was thrown overboard and swallowed by a giant fish, where he spent three days and nights in its belly. Eventually, God commanded the fish to release Jonah, and Jonah finally made his way to Nineveh, where he prophesied to the people and they repented of their sins.

The story of Jonah is often interpreted as a metaphor for the importance of obedience to God's will, even when it may be difficult or uncomfortable. It also highlights the idea of repentance and forgiveness, as seen in the response of the people of Nineveh to Jonah's prophecy. Intererstingly, the chorus of Ye's "Jonah" asks us a question "Like who's here when I need a shoulder to lean on?" All things considered---the obvious answer is God, particularly the God of the Biblical story of Jonah. In the story, Jonah runs away from God's calling, only to be swallowed by a giant fish and eventually spit out onto land to fulfill his mission. Similarly, the narrator of the song is struggling with their own demons, but ultimately hopes that God will be there for them when they need a shoulder to lean on and the demons to be gone.

Anyways, Ye's instagram post made Candace Owens happy & check out "Jonah" if you want to hear the music I'm talking about. And let's not forget about Jonah Ware whose death is a tragic reminder for all victims of gang violence.
