Daryl Davis is not only known for his activism against racism and hate, but also for his talent as a musician. Davis is a skilled pianist who has performed with numerous famous musicians throughout his career including Chuck Berry. In this video, he recalls how a KKK member saw him playing piano and was shocked a black man could play like Jerry Lee Lewis. Daryl had to explain that Jerry Lee Lewis was effectively copying black musicians for his style.
Davis' music has been a powerful tool in his activism, as he often performs for members of the KKK and other white supremacist groups as part of his efforts to engage them in dialogue and promote understanding. Through his music, Davis is able to connect with people on a personal level and break down the barriers of hate and mistrust that often separate individuals of different races and backgrounds.
In an obvious and unifying way, music can be used to promote racial harmony and understanding more broadly. Daryl has played at numerous events and venues throughout his career, sharing his love of music and his message of peace and unity with audiences around the world.
