Matt Walsh is a man of his word and after overwhelming demand in the comments section of his videos he has begun to learn to play the Banjo. Atleast in the only way a being like Matt Walsh can. Shout out to Scott and the other fans that lead the charge to give us this moment. And who better than to teach Matt the ways of the banjo than Winston Marshall, the former Mumford & Sons troubadour who has been hosting a successful podcast via The Spectator for the last fourteen months. He has interviewed the likes of Matt Walsh, Dr. Jordan Peterson and "American Pie" singer-songwriter Don McLean.
The lesson begins with a "finger fitness" camp that Winston seemingly invents to respond to Matt Walsh's overwhelming laziness and bear-like nature. While the segment is quite obviously parody, it is known that the great Romantic era composer Robert Schumann famously ruined his fingers and subsequently his career as a pianist after seeing a Paganini performance and being inspired to stretch and strengthen his fingers with devices and exercises, rather than proper technique.
Eventually after waging an almost impossible war against Matt Walsh's benign indifference, Winston Marshall displays his finger-picking prowess on the instrument with a delicate rendition of "Dueling Banjos", a tune made infamous in the 1972 film Deliverance. Matt ends the performance with a solid open G chord and we are left with a timeless final lesson: "Playing to your strengths".
If you happen to be in the Austin area April 15th, you can check out Winston Marshall performing some music at Mindsfest. Click here to get tickets.
