Is it possible that nothing can change our love of Sam Cooke? Well, perhaps the mysterious circumstances surround his death and his well-known womanizing could perhaps be off putting. But that is the man Sam Cooke, what about his music? This classic song was written and performed by him in 1962, almost unprecedented at the time (remember, The Beatles were the first #1 band who wrote their own songs). Sam came close with this song, as it peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, and also charted at No. 12 on the Hot 100.
Sam begins by wailing: "If I go a million miles away, I'd write a letter each and every day, 'cause honey, nothing, nothing can ever change this love I have for you." The lyrics speak for themselves and because of its classic doo-wop format and catchy melody it has been covered many times, notably by The Fugees, T-Pain & Leon Bridges.
Well, who need a fancy studio when you just have a trusty old webcam and an internet connection? There is something remarkably charming about this quasi-lofi version recorded through consumer grade technology in 2020. Suzanne Santo (of the band honeyhoney) dials in here, strumming the electric guitar and delivering a soulful rendition of this classic. Props to Suzanne for choosing this song, and for her vocal chops. If you wanna hear Suzanne Santo live and happen to be in the Austin area you can check her out at Mindsfest on April 15th.
