Willis, a co-founder of the band, has publicly backed President Donald Trump's use of the song at his rallies, clarifying once and for all that "Y.M.C.A." isn't, and was never meant to be, a "gay anthem."
Willis made it clear on social media, saying, "I knew nothing about the Y being a hang out for gays when I wrote the lyrics." The song, he insists, was about young men finding a hangout spot, not an anthem for any particular group. This bold statement comes amidst a sea of liberal tears, with the left attempting to hijack another piece of classic American culture for their agenda.
Willis isn't having it, and who can blame him? "Get your minds out of the gutter," he stated, defending the song's universal appeal.
Not everything in our culture needs to be politicized or claimed by any one group. "Y.M.C.A." has been a staple at weddings, sports events, and yes, political rallies, proving its broad, inclusive appeal. It's time for the left to stop their relentless march to claim everything under the sun as part of their narrative.
Here's to Victor Willis for calling out the absurdity and keeping "Y.M.C.A." for all to enjoy, no strings attached.
