Check out this 1980 performance of a classic country song that was written by Marty Robbins and Shirl Milete. Robbins also provided background vocal harmonies on the session! Robbins, who was known for his own country hits such as "El Paso" and "Big Iron," co-wrote the song with Milete. Both Robbins and Milete were accomplished songwriters who had written hits for other country music legends such as George Jones and Faron Young.
Released in 1980 as a single by Columbia Records, "Song of the Patriot" reached number 54 on the U.S. Billboard country chart for the week of July 5. Although it was not a commercial hit, the song's powerful lyrics and Cash's heartfelt delivery have made it a beloved and iconic tribute to America's patriotic spirit.
"Song of the Patriot" was later featured on the 1991 compilation album, "The Patriot," alongside other patriotic-themed tracks. The album showcased Cash's dedication to his country and his willingness to use his platform to shed light on important issues. The Carson performance here is part of his "Man in Black" era, where Cash would dawn the black shirt to show his solidarity with the downtrodden in America.
As we continue to face challenges and changes it's interesting to wonder what Johnny Cash would think of the country today. What do you think he would sing about today if he were still alive?
