Zuck made the announcement in a video shared to his Instagram account, a subsidiary of Meta.
"We’re going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies and restoring free expression on our platforms," the Meta CEO said in his video. "More specifically, we’re going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with Community Notes similar to X, starting in the U.S."
Zuckerberg went on to cite president-elect Donald Trump's massive landslide victory as a "tipping poing" in cultural discourse surrounding censorship.
“Governments and legacy media have pushed to censor more and more,” Zuckerberg revealed of the company's censorship pratices, adding “A lot of this is clearly political.”
“What started as a movement to be more inclusive has increasingly been used to shut down opinions and shut out people with different ideas,” Zuck said.
“It’s gone too far," he added.
Although this is a much needed step in the right direction for Meta, it feels as though Zuckerberg's change in heart comes merely in response to the cultural shift, rather than his genuine dedication to free speech on his platforms.
It remains to be seen how or when these changes will take effect, though for now, the counter-culture has secured another victory.
