The dress was by stylist Ali Brooks, who has previously worked with Margaret Cho and Adam Lambert.
Van Ness and his dress were skewered on social media after his photos went viral.
"Dylan Mulvaney’s hairdresser says he’s the victim of transphobia after his bizarre Golden Globe appearance, says it’s “unsettling.” You know what’s unsettling?? A grown man prancing around in heels and a dress as if it’s normal," wrote Libs of TikTok.
Another user took a more somber approach saying, "This is not what men do."
"This is what those with some type of severe mental illness dress like I feel sorry for Jonathan and the people abusing him by praising this," the user said.
One user compared Van Ness' dress to the dolmas, a Greek dish.
"The biggest pandemic our country faces today is a mental health crisis," wrote another user.
The saving grace of the Golden Globes was comedian Nikki Glaser absolutely roasting Hollywood elite.
Her monologue was the spiritual successor to fellow comedian Ricky Gervais' infamous 2020 monologue.
